Terrorism - 25 January 2001
I have heard recently that a link has been found between Usama bin Laden, Saudi-born exile and
wealthy terrorist trainer, and the bombing of the USS Cole in a Yememi refueling port. The
attack left seventeen Navy sailors dead, scores injured, and a gaping hole in the hull of the
Cole. Bin Laden has also been linked to twin bombings of US Embassies in Nairobi, Kenya, and Dar
es Salaam, Tanzania, two years ago, in which nearly three hundred people died. He's also been
linked to the bombing of the World Trade Center in 1993, and now information has been released that
bin Laden has in place an intelligence and communications network of superior quality than that
of even the National Security Agency's and worth trillions of dollars.
With all of this said, it is understood why
Usama bin Laden
holds a place on the
FBI Ten Most Wanted Fugitives List. He, or more specifically his trainees, have killed
hundreds or perhaps thousands of innocent people. Bin Laden does not see the situation this way.
For reasons somewhat blurry to me, but a conclusion that I agree with, he believes that Western
civilization and all those in its service deserve to be punished for their wasteful and
economically imperialistic views. Because of this, bin Laden has declared a state of jihad, or
Islamic holy war, on Western interests around the world. I do not agree with this course of
action. The solution to this problem cannot stem from violence and the killing of innocent
people.
